XMUM Students Attend 2nd Malaysia-China TCM Conference 2025

2025-05-13

On 27 April 2025, a group of undergraduate students from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) programme at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) attended the 2nd Malaysia-China TCM Conference, an event aimed at promoting academic exchange and cooperation in the field of TCM between Malaysia and China.

Also present were XMUM Vice President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zhang Ying and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kim Yun Jin, reflecting the university's support for advancing TCM education and cross-border collaboration.

Held at Wyndham Grand Bangsar Kuala Lumpur, the conference brought together TCM experts, researchers, and practitioners from both countries to discuss recent developments, emerging challenges, and integrative approaches in TCM. The event served as a platform for knowledge sharing and exploring future directions in both clinical and research settings.

Keynote speeches were delivered by TCM specialists from institutions such as Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the People's Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing, and the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association (MCMA).

The conference also featured sessions on mind-body therapies, rooted in the TCM philosophy that all illness begins with the mind, and included demonstrations of QiGong and meditation practices. Students were introduced to historical figures from the Republican era, such as Shi Jinmo, Kong Dehua, Xiao Longyou, and Wang Fengchun, whose work continues to influence TCM today.

XMUM students described the event as informative and eye-opening, gaining exposure to international perspectives and developments in the field.

Year-4 student Ting Lee Hoong commented: "Presentations covered China's long-standing support for TCM, highlighted the contributions of past physicians, and introduced innovations such as 'zero-medicine' cancer therapies and new approaches to prostate treatment."

Lew Jue Wee, another student from the 2022/09 intake, shared that she learned about how TCM and modern medicine are being integrated, including the clinical use of arsenic trioxide from traditional compounds like Pi Shuang and Xiong Huang for leukemia treatment.

The conference highlighted the evolving landscape of TCM and underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue between Malaysia and China. For XMUM students, attending the event offered a broader perspective on their studies and the practical applications of TCM in modern healthcare.
